A useful fit for

Best for owners deliberately choosing a reusable washed granule bed and able to install the required plumbing, drain and GFCI connection.

The main tradeoff

The wash-and-dry cycle occupies the bowl much longer than Whoosh. Exact current completion time conflicts between the overview and archived 2020 manual; only two-cat best-success guidance is treated as the conservative household capacity.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is washable granule cleaning the intended plan for CatGenie A.I.?

Yes. It uses reusable non-absorbent CatGenie Washable Granules and requires water and a drain; do not substitute ordinary or Whoosh litter.

Does the conservative A.I. household guidance cover two cats?

The FAQ uses two cats up to 20 lb each as its best-success guidance; it says three may work in some homes, which is not promoted to a confirmed capacity.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can A.I. be confirmed to finish within a strict 38-minute limit?

No exact current full-cycle time is established: the current overview says 34 minutes, while the 2020 operation manual totals 38. A strict limit therefore cannot rely on the unknown current configuration time.

CatGenie A.I. is the self-washing member of the CatGenie family. The exact current U.S. product option is identified as SKU 891329002093. Instead of clumping litter, it uses reusable, non-absorbent Washable Granules: liquid drains through them, the GenieHand scoops solids into a hopper, and the machine flushes, washes, and warm-air dries the granules. That is a fundamentally different routine from a rotating globe that deposits clumps in a drawer, and from CatGenie’s faster Whoosh model.

Plan a permanent water-and-drain location

The A.I. needs cold water, a route to a toilet or laundry drain, and electricity. The included adapters are intended to share a bathroom or washing-machine connection; the setup guide specifies an eight-foot water-supply hose and a ten-foot drain hose. The current product page lists a 19.25-inch front width, 17.5-inch top width, 21-inch height, and a 24.5-inch depth allowing for the hoses. Those are more useful for a first fit check than the isolated product image, but allow extra room to connect, service, and remove components. CatGenie’s manual calls for a GFCI outlet and says not to use an extension cord. Check fixture compatibility and the full hose route before moving the old box; a drain and water supply are hard prerequisites, not optional accessories.

CatGenie says the waste is discharged to a toilet or laundry waste pipe. It also describes the system as suitable for septic use with approved supplies, but local plumbing and waste rules vary; verify them for your own installation instead of relying on a broad marketing assurance. If no suitable water and drain connection is available, choose a self-cleaning box that stores waste in a removable drawer instead.

Washable Granules simplify one task and narrow another

The granules stay in the bowl and are washed after use, so you do not replace ordinary litter or throw away daily urine clumps. They are not a universal substitute that can be mixed with a cat’s current litter. CatGenie warns that ordinary litter can damage or clog the machine; the A.I. is designed for its own Washable Granules and SaniSolution cartridge. The granules still need topping up as they are kicked out or removed during maintenance, and a cartridge is a required consumable.

Cycle timing is a material tradeoff. The current A.I. overview advertises a 34-minute complete cleaning cycle, including washing and drying. The official 2020 A.I. operation manual lists a 20-minute cleaning stage followed by an 18-minute drying stage. Because those sources differ and the manual’s firmware/version bridge to today’s SKU is not established, we do not treat a precise A.I. completion time as confirmed for a strict maximum-time match. Expect a substantially longer interruption than Whoosh’s approximately seven-minute cycle, and keep another suitable place available while the machine is occupied.

The app supports activity records, schedules, cartridge tracking, and settings; the manual also describes on-device controls and says a disconnected unit keeps its last programmed settings but stops recording data. The exact Wi-Fi band is not given. A log of visits is not the same as individual-cat identification, a medical record, or a diagnosis. If seeing or collecting waste is important, the automatic flush is a disadvantage rather than a convenience.

Cat fit, supplies, and upkeep

The FAQ’s best-success guidance is two cats up to 20 pounds each; it says three may work in some homes. The technical page lists a 25-pound maximum, so we show both statements and use two cats as the conservative numeric household capacity. The FAQ also says kittens should be older than six months. No minimum automatic-mode weight is published in the sources reviewed, and the open bowl’s entry dimensions are not separately specified. A cat’s actual posture and ability to use the bowl still matter more than the fact that the top looks open.

The A.I. manual says one SaniSolution cartridge covers 120 washes in manual or time-activated modes and 240 in cat-activation mode; the current product page repeats those figures. Washable Granules do not need routine replacement, but the manual says to top them up, inspect the drying vent, clean the light guide, and take the unit apart for periodic cleaning. It recommends a quarterly maintenance cycle as well as a twice-yearly disassembly clean. That is not a “never touch the box” system. The manufacturer also sells different package bundles; read the exact offer for granule, cartridge, mat, dome, and warranty contents rather than assuming every A.I. listing contains the same extras.

Where the A.I. belongs in your shortlist

Choose this model only if you accept the plumbing installation and specifically want reusable, washed granules. In the finder, selecting washable granules and a direct-drain waste route points to the A.I.; choosing Whoosh’s water-soluble clumping litter instead points to the other CatGenie configuration. An essential three-cat rating does not pass the conservative A.I. capacity we use, and the missing current-cycle confirmation means an entered maximum cleaning time cannot be satisfied by an unknown value.

For a household that wants familiar clumping litter and no plumbing, compare a waste-drawer globe or open-top sifter instead. A Whisker Litter-Robot or Neakasa M1 Plus avoids the CatGenie-specific plumbing and granule system, but it handles waste differently and has separate litter, sizing, and drawer limits. The A.I. is not a shortcut to a conventional litter box; it is a connected sanitary appliance with recurring supplies and a hands-on maintenance schedule. Also note that the current retail listing states an 18-month warranty while the 2020 A.I. manual prints a two-year term. Check the warranty attached to the exact offer rather than treating an older manual as current coverage.
