A useful fit for

A candidate for a cat that meets the documented age and weight limits, accepts a moving open-top chamber, and uses clumping litter; the app can report use and waste level.

The main tradeoff

The exact weight, Wi-Fi band and numerical household capacity remain unconfirmed. The product page and support FAQ disagree on machine weight; the one-cat bin-duration claims vary between 20 and 21 days, and a launch-release multi-cat phrase is footnoted as one-cat. Treat neither the duration nor broad wording as a household guarantee.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is CleanWell 4393 an open-top rotating sifter rather than a rake pan or enclosed globe?

Yes. The manual describes a drum, grate and waste bin; the top of the rotating litter chamber is open. It requires clumping litter.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does 4393 support app reporting, and is its Wi-Fi band known?

BISSELL documents app use and waste-bin alerts; an exact supported Wi-Fi band is not established in the inspected U.S. sources.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the manufacturer set age and weight boundaries for automatic use?

The manual says not for cats below 2 kg or above 15 kg; BISSELL support says kittens six months or younger are not suitable. A cat must meet both guides.

Explore this need in the finder →
Has BISSELL rated a numeric household cat capacity, even for one cat?

No numeric cat-count capacity is published for 4393. The one-cat waste-bin interval claim is not a cat-capacity rating.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the exact 4393 package include a fold-out cardboard box step, separate from the permanent stair?

Yes. BISSELL support for 4393 says to use the included box step made from the perforated cardboard insert. It separately says the permanent BISSELL litter-box step does not come with the machine; this does not establish a sturdy ramp or a numeric step height.

What changes when the CleanWell app cleaning delay is adjusted?

BISSELL says a shorter wait may reduce odor but disrupt clumping, while a longer wait may help clumps form but let odor build; it suggests five to seven minutes as a balance. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a litter-by-litter test.

A moving open-top drum, not a rake tray

BISSELL CleanWell differs from rake-across-a-flat-tray designs. Its exact current U.S. listing identifies model 4393. A drum holds clumping litter; after a cat leaves, rotating sifting sends clumps to a bag-lined waste bin. The chamber is open, but still has powered moving parts. It may suit a cat that dislikes a tunnel entry but tolerates motion; it is not a fit for a cat that avoids all moving equipment.

Model 4393 is the only machine in BISSELL’s captured U.S. litter-box category page. Do not silently treat nearby model numbers as finish options: BISSELL support also names 4394, 4395, 4396 and 4393A, while the product page and in-box details here are for 4393. Their exact packages and model crosswalk need separate confirmation.

Fit starts with age, weight and the entrance

The safety instructions say not to use the box with a cat under 2 kg or over 15 kg. Converted to the finder’s pound field, that is approximately 4.4 lb at the low boundary and 33.1 lb at the upper boundary. BISSELL’s separate support guidance says cats six months old or younger are not suitable. If a cat is exactly six months or below either weight boundary, do not assume automatic mode is appropriate; a 7-month age answer and 4.5-to-33.0-pound range are conservative whole-month and tenth-pound screening values, not a veterinary assessment.

Those limits do not tell you whether a cat can turn around comfortably. BISSELL lists outside dimensions of 26 inches wide by 21.1 deep by 24.7 high, but I did not find an entrance width, interior headroom, step height or numeric household capacity. BISSELL’s box-step instructions document a fold-out cardboard step at the front; it is separate from the permanent litter-box step and gives no published entrance-height measurement. The official FAQ calls the machine 23 pounds while the product listing says 25.1 pounds; because BISSELL’s own sources disagree, weight is not used as a hard-fit specification.

Use the litter and floor conditions the manual names

Clumping litter is required. The guide recommends a two-to-three-inch depth between the MIN and MAX lines. BISSELL does not compare individual clumping formulas, so check whether your chosen litter sifts cleanly. The machine plugs into a wall adapter and starts leveling when powered. Use a firm, level indoor surface; BISSELL says to place a mat in front rather than partly underneath, since uneven support can interfere with detection.

There is also a practical timing choice in the BISSELL odor guide. It says a one-minute delay may reduce odor but can affect clumping, while a 15-minute delay gives clumps longer to form but may let odor build; BISSELL suggests roughly five to seven minutes as a balance. That is a manufacturer troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee for every litter or household. If you shorten the wait, watch whether your own clumping litter is firm enough to sift; if you lengthen it, do not assume the sealed drawer makes odor irrelevant.

The official page lists app use tracking and waste-level alerts, along with a magnetic-seal OdorVault bin. These features may help with reminders and containing bagged waste, but the app data is not a diagnosis and cannot establish which individual cat used the box. The exact Wi-Fi band is not stated in the checked U.S. documents, so CleanWell should not be the match when 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or dual-band support is a hard requirement. Its six-foot power cord also means a nearby outlet and cord-safe placement matter.

Transition, empty and clean it without treating claims as schedules

Introduce it gradually rather than switching every cat to a moving box at once. The guide says to leave it unplugged while a hesitant cat investigates and power it only after the cat is comfortable; never force the cat. Keep familiar litter available and watch the first cycles. The guide describes a cat-present sensor, perimeter radar and other safeguards, but these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent safety certification.

The exact 4393 package lists two 15-count waste-liner packs and a litter mat. The manual says to keep the liner flat so it does not block sensors. BISSELL claims up to 20 days for one cat on the product page and FAQ, and up to 21 after leveling the waste in the manual; neither is a dependable schedule for your household or a reason to leave the box unattended. A May 2026 BISSELL press release uses multi-cat wording alongside the 20-day claim, but the footnote on that same page limits the cited figure to a one-cat home. Do not treat that broader phrase as a multi-cat emptying interval or capacity rating. Check the bin indicator and actual fill. The stated 60 dB is not an independent sound test. The sealed drawer still needs bag changes, litter top-ups and regular attention.

For deeper cleaning, the manual directs owners to empty the litter, unplug the unit before service, remove and wash the parts specified in the guide, and let components dry completely before reinstalling them. The cited manual gives a deeper-cleaning interval of roughly every three to six months. That routine is more involved than wiping a rake tray, and it is worth considering if lifting and disassembling a drum would be difficult.

Who should compare it with other open-top designs?

CleanWell suits a shopper seeking an open top, rotating sifting and app alerts, if the cat meets its age and weight guidance. Compare the Neakasa M1 Plus for a lower documented weight threshold and package-specific step or fence; its Wi-Fi band and capacity are also unknown. The PetSafe OpenSky is a different open-top chamber with a stated 2.4 GHz connection and 8.5-liter drawer. A flat rake pan is another maintenance plan. Choose by cat fit, litter, space and cleanup—not just app claims or a long bin interval.
