Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does SmartSpin combine clumping litter with an enclosed globe and app reporting?
Yes. Its rotating sphere sifts clumps into a drawer, and its app uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Explore this need in the finder →Does SmartSpin meet a 25-pound upper cat-weight guide, but not 25.5 pounds?
PetSafe lists cats up to 25 lb; it does not document a higher guide for this model.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a 2.5-pound cat at least at the documented SmartSpin sensor threshold?
The manual describes a weight-change threshold above 2.5 lb and says kittens should be at least 2.5 lb and six months old before automatic operation.

The ScoopFree SmartSpin trades the long crystal tray and traveling rake of older ScoopFree models for an enclosed sphere with a litter sifter and waste drawer. After a cat leaves, the unit separates clumps and stores waste in a closed compartment. The My PetSafe app adds weight and usage history, alerts and settings; a local panel provides on-demand cleaning, a child lock and a drawer-full signal. This is a better fit than a basic rake when clumping litter and connected oversight are both wanted, but it is still a powered appliance that needs floor space, an outlet, a compatible Wi-Fi setup and regular waste checks.
The white configuration is PAL00-17985 and the official product selector also offers the black PAL00-18160. The support page groups those two codes with ZAL00-18160, but PetSafe’s direct URL for that third code did not resolve to a product page when checked. The review covers the two color configurations directly shown on the exact SmartSpin product family, and leaves the support-only identifier as an unresolved package bridge rather than claiming that it is another known color or bundle.
Think about fit before relying on the low-entry description
PetSafe calls the design low-profile and says its base is 12 inches from the ground, with an intended cat weight guide up to 25 pounds. That is useful context, but not a measured entrance width or a guarantee that every body shape will turn comfortably inside a sphere. The manufacturer does not publish a numeric household cat capacity or a full footprint with width and depth labels on the product page, so those filters remain unknown. Measure the actual room and allow space to open and remove the drawer; a compact-looking marketing image is not a room plan.
The automatic system is weight-triggered. The digital guide says it recognizes a weight change of more than 2.5 pounds and starts a default three-minute countdown when the cat exits; the app can change the delay. If the cat returns before the cycle, the countdown pauses and resets after the next exit. The manual says to keep the system in manual operation until a kitten is both at least 2.5 pounds and six months old. Do not infer that a lighter kitten is safe just because the sensor responds, or that app alerts replace watching the animal during a litter-box transition.
How long between drawer visits?
SmartSpin’s product page describes its six-liter drawer as holding up to two weeks of waste. Its user guide, however, sets a much more useful care expectation: empty about once a week for one cat, twice a week for two, and every few days for three or more. The two statements are not a reason to promise a fortnight between checks. Treat “up to two weeks” as a capacity headline; plan to inspect the drawer on the manual’s cat-count schedule and respond sooner if the full indicator or app alert appears. More than one cat can make the difference between those timelines meaningful.
PetSafe says the model works with any litter and identifies clumping litter as the compatible category in its specifications, with premium clumping litter recommended for best performance. The manual adds an important limitation: larger pellets, including tofu-style litter, may not work properly with the sifter. For a predictable first setup, use a clumping litter with a texture the sifter can pass and avoid assuming that every alternative pellet will behave like fine clay. This is not the choice for someone who specifically needs a crystal tray; the Crystal Smart is a separate rake-and-crystal system.
Connected features help with routine, not diagnosis
The app reports weight and visit activity over time, can notify you about a full drawer and allows some settings to be changed. The body’s display also signals weight detection and waste capacity. These data can make it easier to notice a change worth checking, but they do not identify which cat used the box in a multi-cat home or explain why the pattern changed. They should be treated as household context, not a medical assessment. App connectivity requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi according to PetSafe’s current product and setup material; households with only a network configuration the product cannot join should not count on remote reporting.
Cleaning requires more than replacing a bag. The guide shows emptying the drawer, refilling litter to its mark, cleaning the sifter and wiping the inside of the sphere. PetSafe describes a smooth interior designed to make wiping easier, not a maintenance-free surface. Follow the sequence, remove power when the instructions call for it, and let washable parts dry fully. Keep the sensors clear and do not overfill: the line is a practical boundary, because excess litter can spill into the waste drawer.
SmartSpin, OpenSky or a rake?
SmartSpin suits a cat who accepts an enclosed globe and a household that will actually use app logs or remote settings. Its 25-pound weight guide and 2.5-pound automatic threshold are not identical to OpenSky’s published range; OpenSky has an open-top rotating chamber, an 8.5-liter drawer, a 33-pound upper guide and a three-pound minimum sensor change. Neither source gives a numeric cat-count rating. The ScoopFree Clumping offers a simpler open rake arrangement without documented app reporting, while crystal-tray models avoid clump separation but need a different litter routine.
Standard SmartSpin includes the box, power adapter, waste-bin liners and two deodorizer packs. If a mat and larger starter-supply allotment are useful, compare the separately listed SmartSpin Bundle; it is the same basic machine in a package, not a different cleaning mechanism. In short, select SmartSpin for the actual enclosed sifting and app combination, not because its app makes upkeep disappear. Keep the manual’s shorter emptying cadence, the kitten rule, litter caveat and real clearance needs in the decision.
