Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does LR4 support Whisker's optional LitterHopper?
Yes, Whisker lists LitterHopper compatibility, and its configurable product page offers an add-Hopper choice. It is not part of the base box.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the current Litter-Robot 4 page show the same physical base in color and accessory configurations?
Yes. The page exposes black and white bases, several bezel colors and optional Hopper configurations. Check the exact child SKU and included pieces before buying.
Explore this need in the finder →Does LR4 add WasteID over Litter-Robot 5?
No. WasteID is listed for the 5 and 5 Pro, not LR4. LR4 still has app connectivity and litter-level monitoring.
Explore this need in the finder →What is the LR4's published entry step?
Whisker's comparison chart lists 6.9 inches. Compare that physical height with the cat and the actual room rather than assuming the number predicts acceptance.

Litter-Robot 4 remains in Whisker's current automatic litter-box lineup. It uses the familiar rotating-globe method: after a cat leaves, the globe sifts clumps into a covered drawer and returns clean litter to the bed. Whisker rates it for up to four cats and lists ongoing litter- and waste-level monitoring through its app. Unlike the newer 5 models, LR4 does not list WasteID or an integrated camera system.
The company says a one-cat household may go up to eight days between drawer emptying. That is an upper manufacturer claim, not a schedule for a multi-cat home. The drawer still needs regular attention, and the unit requires compatible litter, periodic cleaning and an occasional sensor reset after service. Its primary value is the combination of a four-cat rating, connected level monitoring and a configurable optional LitterHopper path—not a claim that it avoids ordinary maintenance.
Know which package you are comparing
Whisker's configurable page exposes an exact child SKU for each listed base, bezel and LitterHopper choice. The manufacturer's own names make the distinction concrete: LR4-0101-00-US is the white base with white bezel and no included Hopper; LR4-0301-00-US is the black base with black bezel and no Hopper; LR4-0103-00-US and LR4-0303-00-US are the white- and black-base offers titled with LitterHopper. The bezel-coded child offers are also mapped by their exact page titles. These finishes change appearance, not the cleaning method or published fit figures. If a Hopper is essential, select a child offer expressly titled with the accessory rather than relying on LR4 compatibility or an abbreviated retailer name; current stock and seller package contents can change.
The base unit's hardware measures 22 by 27 inches, with a 29.5-inch overall height. The entryway is 15.75 inches square and the listed interior headroom is 16.5 inches. The step is 6.9 inches, and the empty machine weighs 24 pounds. Those dimensions are close to the standard Litter-Robot 5, but the newer model offers more headroom, a color screen and WasteID. EVO is shorter, narrower and has a lower step, though its entry and interior are smaller.
Weight guidance needs a careful reading
Whisker's current comparison chart lists a 3-to-25-pound weight range for LR4, while its LR4 FAQ says the model has no weight limit and discusses its interior dimensions instead. Because those statements differ, treat 25 pounds as the comparison-chart suitability guide, not as a hard mechanical cutoff. For a larger cat, compare body shape and the 15.75-inch entry and interior space rather than relying on one number. The 3-pound automatic-mode minimum still matters: a smaller kitten may not trigger the scale reliably, so follow Whisker's supervised semi-automatic instructions for that situation.
What is different from the 5 generation?
The LR4 has a five-button LED control panel rather than the 5's color LCD, and it lacks WasteID. Its monitoring can report the waste drawer and litter level, whereas EVO's comparison-chart entry is limited to the full-drawer alert. It does not have built-in dual cameras. It does support the optional LitterHopper, which may be a useful distinction if the owner wants an add-on that replenishes litter. The standard 5 also supports LitterHopper and adds WasteID, with a five-cat rating; the Pro adds cameras to that platform.
Whisker's LR4 quick-start guidance calls for clumping litter. It rules out strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litter, newspaper-based litter and wood pellets. The automatic cycle cannot make unsuitable litter sift correctly. Read the exact manual for fill line, reset and cleaning steps, and keep an eye on the sensor status rather than treating app alerts as a substitute for inspection.
Who should choose LR4?
LR4 makes sense when you need up to four-cat manufacturer capacity, want continuing litter-level readings, and prefer a model with a current optional Hopper configuration. It is less compelling when you specifically want WasteID, an LCD screen or integrated camera views; compare the standard 5 or 5 Pro. If a compact footprint and lower step matter most, compare EVO—but check the smaller opening, interior and two-cat limit.
Before purchase, identify the exact SKU and whether the Hopper is actually included. Check seller warranty and return terms for the particular package, not merely the core product name. The product's configurable page contains color and accessory variations that preserve the underlying LR4 mechanism but can change what arrives in the box.
