Model identification

PetSafe Simply Clean PAL17, PAL00 and ZAL00: identify the exact version

PetSafe has used the Simply Clean name for more than one automatic litter-box version. The open bowl and conveyor are a recognizable family resemblance, not a safe substitute for reading the model label. The original PAL17-10786 has its own 24-page operating guide; the later support family names PAL00-16741 and ZAL00-16408 together, while its linked manual cover names ZAL00-16408. Those records do not support treating all three codes as one specification sheet.

Start with the code on the base

For an existing machine, find the identification label on the base and match the full number. PAL17-10786 is the original version. PAL00-16741 is named in PetSafe's later support page, but it also appears as a distinct row in an older manufacturer product guide. ZAL00-16408 is named on the later New Simply Clean manual cover. If a listing merely says “Simply Clean,” a photo of a familiar bowl or conveyor is not enough to determine the cycle, size, support part, or age guidance.

The difference is operational, not a cosmetic color choice. PAL17's exact guide and support page describe one complete bowl rotation each hour. The ZAL00 manual describes one complete rotation every 90 minutes, with the setup directions describing alternating periods of motion and rest. The available PAL00 records conflict: a PetSafe product-guide row assigns that code an hourly rotation, while the later page that groups PAL00-16741 with ZAL00-16408 describes a 90-minute family rotation and links the ZAL00 manual. Since PetSafe does not say whether PAL00 changed internally or which version the group page covers, an exact PAL00 cycle value cannot be selected responsibly. If a strict maximum cycle time matters, do not assume the hourly figure applies to every PAL00-16741 unit.

What the three plans share—and what they do not

All three are open-bowl conveyor designs rather than a sensor-triggered rake pan, enclosed rotating globe, or CatGenie-style plumbed unit. PetSafe's descriptions present slow, recurring bowl movement and a conveyor that carries sifted clumps to a separate waste bin. The material remains open at the top; there is no globe entrance to squeeze through. That does not establish the entry height or body dimensions for every version, and it should not be used as proof that a particular cat can enter comfortably.

PAL17's model-specific operating guide specifies clumping, scoopable clay litter only, with the litter kept at its fill line. Its manual supports a cat-weight guide of 15 pounds or less, says not to use automatic mode before six months, and describes the machine as unsuitable for cats who have difficulty entering or leaving. The New Simply Clean manual gives the same 15-pound guide and six-month rule for ZAL00-16408 and requires clumping, scoopable clay. The sources inspected do not establish a numerical cat-count rating for either exact model. PAL00's accessible model records do not resolve an exact age or upper-weight limit, so those values remain unknown for that code.

Maintenance is still part of ownership. The New Simply Clean material says to inspect the covered waste bin at least every other day and more often for multiple cats; its manual recommends a thorough cleaning every two weeks in a single-cat home. PAL17's guide gives the same cleaning cadence. These are owner-care instructions, not a promise of odor-free operation or a measured bin capacity. The later New Simply Clean support page describes a replaceable carbon filter and says the bin can use a bag or no liner; do not assume that every used or older unit includes current replacement parts.

Use the manual for the exact code

For PAL17-10786, the model-specific support page and PAL17 operating guide are the primary operating references. The dated 2018 PetSafe catalog adds its labeled length, width, and height. For the later family, use the New Simply Clean support page and the linked ZAL00-16408 manual; the setup directions provide the 30-minute movement/rest sequence. Confirm a replacement part against both the label and the manufacturer’s part listing before ordering.

Owner reference versus new purchase

PetSafe's captured U.S. automatic litter-box directory contained 11 items and did not list PAL17-10786, PAL00-16741, or ZAL00-16408. Separate support and parts pages still name those older codes, which is useful for troubleshooting an existing appliance but does not establish a current exact full-unit offer. This is not a claim that no retailer or used seller has one. The individual reviews therefore retain model-specific owner information while excluding all three from buying recommendations. For a new search, compare current, separately documented PetSafe products such as ScoopFree SmartSpin, OpenSky, or the ScoopFree Clumping rather than assuming the older Simply Clean parts, litter or cycle transfer to them.
