LitterMaid Classic Self-Cleaning Litter Box (LM580) review

Historical U.S. reference for an open, hard-clumping-litter rake box that the archived product page sized for one cat; its exact shared Use & Care manual gives a 20-minute resettable wait before raking.

Historical owner reference for LitterMaid product number LM580. The 2013 page's one-cat / 15-lb phrasing is retained as written rather than treated as an inclusive weight guarantee. Current exact offer and parts compatibility are not confirmed.

A useful fit for

A useful owner reference if your exact box is marked LM580 and you are trying to identify the open hard-clumping rake routine and its one-cat product-page guide.

The main tradeoff

The LM580 is not a current buying recommendation. Its old product page and shared manual specify the litter, 20-minute wait and age safeguard, but do not establish a precise upper cat-weight range, room-fit dimensions, full rake duration, current replacement supplies or a current exact offer.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does LM580 use an uncovered rake tray with hard-clumping litter?

Yes. The exact LM580 product page identifies a rake tray, and its shared Use & Care manual specifies hard-clumping litter. That is a different routine from crystal-tray rakes and rotating globes.

Can the '15-lb cat' phrase be used as a verified inclusive upper-weight guarantee?

No. The page says one, 15-lb cat, but does not define an inclusive maximum. A hard upper-weight requirement must remain unconfirmed.

Is the 20-minute wait the whole rake cycle?

No. The manual uses 20 minutes as the wait before the rake begins; it does not state how long the whole clean takes.

Identify the model before treating an old box as a match

This assessment is for the Classic Self-Cleaning Litter Box marked product number LM580. The archived LitterMaid U.S. product page names that exact number and describes the smaller Classic as a one-cat model; its adjoining “15-lb cat” wording does not define a precise inclusive upper-weight limit. The 2014 Classic Series Use & Care book names LM580 alongside LM680C and LM980, and gives shared instructions for the rake family. These are useful owner references, not current purchase offers. The old direct LM580 page returned 404 when checked in 2026, but one missing page does not establish that no retailer has stock or that every support route has ended.

The image is exact LM580 package art, not a home-use photograph. Check the product-number label; a similar-looking Classic is not proof that the same parts fit.

An open rake, not a globe or crystal tray

The LM580 has an uncovered litter tray and a powered rake. Its official page and the shared manual specify hard-clumping litter. The mechanism moves clumps toward a disposable waste receptacle, where a carbon filter is attached; the manual specifically says not to use non-clumping, crystal or pearl-like litter. That is a different routine from a crystal rake or a rotating globe sifter. Using unapproved litter is not a harmless way to make this model behave like another category.

The manual says the rake starts after a 20-minute wait once sensors have detected a visit and the cat leaves. The sensors must be blocked for at least ten seconds to activate the cleaning process. If a cat returns during the wait, the timer resets and another 20-minute delay follows. That is the delay before the rake begins, not a published duration for the complete rake trip. If your essential requirement is a confirmed full cycle under a particular number of minutes, the LM580 does not meet it on the evidence reviewed.

Fit, entry and the kitten warning

The archived product page calls this a fit for one cat and includes “15-lb” in the phrase, but does not say that 15 pounds is a guaranteed inclusive maximum. The matching guidance uses the one-cat claim but leaves exact upper weight, entry width, usable bed size, footprint and headroom unknown. Measure the actual unit and route, and observe whether your cat can step in, turn and leave before relying on a used box. The manual says the system is not intended for cats that may have difficulty entering or leaving, including some older, incapacitated or handicapped cats; a familiar shape or included supply set does not resolve that fit concern.

The manufacturer manual also warns not to run the clumping system for kittens under six months. Its direction is to leave the unit off until the kitten is old enough and use litter formulated for kittens. That age condition is not the same as a weight guarantee: the LM580 page's “15-lb” language and the manual's kitten guidance answer different fit questions. If your household cannot provide a separate safe manual routine while a kitten grows, this older automatic cycle is not a suitable shortcut.

What ownership still asks of you

The manual describes household current through the AC adapter as regular power. The compartment accepts eight AA cells for backup during an outage; the manual warns that batteries are not for continuous operation. That can preserve the design's operation during a power interruption, but it does not turn the box into a cordless unit. Dusty sensors, a jammed rake, excessive litter or a full receptacle can interrupt the automated routine. The guidebook explains weekly cleaning and recommends a more thorough monthly clean; loose residue may still need spot attention with the supplied scoop-and-rake cleaner.

The 2014 manual's LM580 column lists four waste receptacles, four carbon filters, the cleaner and AC adapter. Its accessory list does not name a paw-cleaning ramp for LM580; the ramp is called out with LM680C and LM980. Verify the actual carton or included parts if acquiring an old box. A historical starter count is not a promise of what any used seller still has, and I could not verify present-day exact replacement-part availability or interchangeability with another LitterMaid model.

How your answers change the shortlist

An uncovered, hard-clumping requirement describes the LM580's documented operating plan, but its reference-only status means it stays out of current buying recommendations even when those answers match. A current clumping-litter rake such as the separately assessed PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping can be a starting point for a present purchase, but it is not a claim of compatible receptacles, identical litter rules or identical cycle timing. Choosing crystal litter, a covered entry, a numerical two-cat capacity or an exact room-fit measurement makes the LM580 a poor answer because those conditions are either incompatible or unverified.

The optional receptacle/filter-pair question is useful only if you are checking the historical carton: the LM580 manual records four pairs. It does not mean the LM580 is being offered as a current option. If you require eight original pairs or a present seller's confirmed consumables, the LM580's documentation does not establish that need. A buyer should not infer a higher cat capacity from a larger pile of starter bags, nor assume current supplies fit because the product family name is similar.

Bottom line for an LM580 owner

The product number points to a one-cat, open hard-clumping rake with a 20-minute resettable wait, a kitten safeguard and four documented receptacle/filter pairs. Exact maximum weight, total cleaning time, room dimensions, current supplies and exact offers remain unverified. Keep the model label and manual version together when asking about parts; this preserved assessment is not a buying link.
