Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the LM980 use a clumping-litter rake, rather than a crystal pan or rotating globe?
Yes. Its official page and the shared Classic manual identify the hard-clumping rake arrangement. The multi-cat label does not change that operating plan.
Explore this need in the finder →Does '50% more litter' mean the LM980 is rated for 50% more cats?
No. The page compares litter held with the smaller Classic 580; it does not give a numerical household cat rating or litter volume.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the 20-minute wait a published full cleaning-cycle duration?
No. The manual describes a wait before the rake starts and a reset if a cat re-enters. It gives no complete rake-cycle time.

The LitterMaid Classic Self-Cleaning Litter Box 980 is identified by product number LM980 on an archived U.S. manufacturer page. That page calls it the multi-cat Classic and says its tray holds 50% more litter than the LM580. It does not state a numerical cat count or a litter volume. “Multi-cat” is meaningful as product positioning, but it is not enough to promise a specific household rating, to multiply an emptying interval, or to conclude that it is rated for two, three or four cats. Its 2013 archived offer showed “Out of Stock” at that date only; that historical status is not the current stock picture.
The linked product art is a small LM980 package rendering with a staged cat, not an owner photo or scale demonstration. Its product number matters: the shared Classic manual lists different supplies for LM580, LM680C and LM980.
What the 50-percent comparison does—and does not—say
The LM980 remains an uncovered clumping-litter rake. The 2014 Use & Care book specifies premium hard-clumping litter and cautions against non-clumping, crystal and pearl-like materials. As the cat exits, sensors start the cleaning process; after a 20-minute wait the rake moves forward and back to send waste to a disposable receptacle. A return visit during the wait resets the timer. The page's “50% more litter” statement compares the amount the tray can hold to LM580; it does not document a larger motor capacity, 50% more cats, an extra-long receptacle interval or a different wait time.
The package's four receptacles and four carbon filters match the LM980 manual column. The same manual lists a paw-cleaning ramp for LM980, a scoop/rake cleaner and an AC adapter. Eight AA cells can serve as backup during an outage, but regular daily power comes from the adapter. The ramp is an included accessory in that recorded configuration, not a measurement of the opening or evidence that every cat can enter comfortably.
Capacity and fit questions to leave unanswered
If you need a strict numeric cat capacity, the LM980 does not satisfy that essential requirement. The matcher leaves its capacity unknown rather than converting a broad multi-cat label into an arbitrary number. That may seem conservative, but it makes the comparison honest: the LM980 and the one-cat LM580 are not interchangeable on a capacity question, while the available sources do not specify how many cats LM980 supports. Likewise, the manual and page material reviewed do not provide reliable labeled unit dimensions, entry width, interior headroom or step height. Measure an actual unit and the clearances around it before planning a room.
The manual's warning applies across the Classic models: it says clumping litter is not intended for kittens younger than six months and says to leave the box off until a kitten is old enough. It also cautions that cats with difficulty entering or leaving may not be suited to this design. Those operating boundaries deserve more weight than the generic multi-cat label. There is no separately published total rake-cycle time, so an owner should not confuse the twenty-minute waiting period with the full time needed to clear the tray.
Maintenance is part of the choice
A disposable receptacle and carbon filter contain raked waste, but they still have to be replaced and the tray and rake must be cleaned. The manual includes weekly cleaning directions and recommends a more thorough monthly clean. It advises wiping sensor areas because dust can affect operation; a rake jam or too-high litter can also interrupt a cycle. Those care instructions are not evidence that the unit is self-maintaining or odor-free. The precise replacement part numbers and present supply availability remain unverified here, so do not order a similarly named LitterMaid pack without checking its actual compatibility with LM980.
Because the old exact product route now returns 404, this assessment remains an owner reference and not a current product recommendation. That single route result does not prove that no used unit or remaining stock exists. It does mean that the reviewed source set has not established a current exact offer or part bridge. If considering a secondhand LM980, confirm the label, included ramp, tray condition, rake movement, sensor response, adapter and any parts with the seller before relying on it.
How the recommendation changes with your answers
A hard-clumping, uncovered routine is consistent with the LM980's documented mechanism; a crystal-only plan or covered-entry requirement is not. A ramp requirement is supported for the historical package, but a fit requirement for a disabled cat or a minimum opening width cannot be answered from the source. A three-cat essential is not met merely because the title says Multi Cat. Choose a current, individually documented model whose numeric capacity fits, or ask the manufacturer for a written answer about the exact LM980 identity.
If you compare current models, the separately assessed PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping is a contemporary clumping-rake starting point, and enclosed or open-top sifters are distinct alternatives if your cat accepts their litter and entry. None is a consumables-equivalent replacement just because the word “rake” appears in both descriptions. The optional supply-count question can show the historical distinction that LM980's manual lists four pairs, but it cannot turn LM980 into a presently verified purchase.
Bottom line for an LM980 owner
LM980 is the better documented choice in this Classic family for the larger tray claim and an included ramp, but the sources do not establish a numeric cat limit. Its hard-clumping rake, six-month kitten warning, 20-minute resettable pre-clean wait and four-pair original supply list are useful identification details. Keep the “50% more litter” statement attached to tray fill comparison only. Do not read it as 50% more cats, and do not buy it on the assumption of current stock or parts that have not been verified.
