A useful fit for

A useful owner reference for a machine labeled LME5500 when you need to identify its one-cat page guide, open rake routine and clumping-litter instructions.

The main tradeoff

The LME5500 is not a current buying recommendation. Its one-cat language, ten-minute pre-rake wait and common Elite safety/cleaning instructions are documented, but exact maximum weight, labeled dimensions, total cycle time, package ramp/supply quantity, current parts and a current exact offer are not established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the LME5500 product page give a one-cat guide or a numeric upper-weight guarantee?

The page identifies LME5500 and says “1, 15-lb cat.” That supports its one-cat positioning; it does not define an inclusive maximum weight.

Does the LME5500 manual support crystal litter in its rake tray?

No. The Elite manual specifies premium hard-clumping litter and rules out crystal, pearl-like and non-clumping litter.

Is a paw-cleaning ramp confirmed in every LME5500 package?

No. The shared Elite manual calls the ramp optional or model-dependent and does not fix the LME5500 carton contents.

Match the product number to the Elite 5500 evidence

This owner reference covers the LitterMaid Elite product that prints Product No. LME5500 on its archived U.S. detail page. That page calls the box the right size for “1, 15-lb cat.” The model is therefore documented for one cat, but the wording does not define an inclusive maximum weight or explain the fit of a cat above that phrase. Do not turn an old marketing line into a precise cat-weight guarantee. A similar case or rake is not enough to establish that the tray, rake or receptacle parts fit; check the label on the machine.

The illustration is the exact archived 150-pixel LME5500 product image. It is a small product rendering on a white background, not a photograph of a used unit in a home, and it cannot confirm actual size, condition or present package contents. The dated page and manual help identify a machine; they do not show that this model is currently sold or that replacement parts are available today.

A 10-minute delay before a rake, not a 10-minute clean

The LME5500 uses an open tray and a motorized rake. Its manual says the sensors must be blocked for at least five seconds to register a cat's use. After the cat exits, the unit begins a 10-minute countdown and activates its ionic air-cleaner function; after that wait, the rake moves clumps toward the disposable waste receptacle. If the cat returns before the countdown ends, the timer resets for another 10 minutes. The stated wait is not the full time required for a rake cycle, and the manual does not provide a complete-cycle duration.

The sleep setting is a separate function: the manual describes a programmed nine-hour inactive period, followed by a rake cycle, with the nine-hour and 15-hour normal-operation periods repeating on a daily schedule. A household that wants cleaning to happen immediately after every visit should understand that the model deliberately delays it. A return visit resets the short exit delay; sleep mode can defer raking longer. Neither setting is equivalent to a sensor-based “clean now” control.

The manual describes a safety bar that stops and reverses the rake if it touches an object behind it on its return. It also describes repeated attempts to clear an obstacle before the rake returns to its home position. Those features are protections against certain obstructions, not proof that it is safe to leave a cat or child near moving parts. The same instructions warn against contact with moving parts and require close supervision near children.

Hard-clumping litter and a meaningful age restriction

The Elite Use & Care book specifies premium hard-clumping litter and explicitly says not to use non-clumping, crystal or pearl-like litter. That requirement is central to the design: the rake is meant to push formed clumps into its receptacle. It is not a crystal-tray rake, a globe that sifts a bed of litter, or a washable-granule plumbing system. Switching to a different litter format to suit a current preference is not supported by the manual.

The manufacturer warns that the unit is not intended for kittens under six months and says the automatic system should remain off until a kitten is old enough. It also says the appliance is not intended for some handicapped, incapacitated or very old cats that might struggle to enter or leave. Because the tray's exact opening dimensions are not supplied in the reviewed sources, take the animal's movement and entry needs seriously rather than assuming a listed one-cat capacity solves physical fit. If a cat needs an always-manual box, a familiar open tray is the safer routine than relying on an automatic rake.

Package and maintenance details need an exact check

The shared Elite manual identifies a model-specific tray for LME5500 and separate LME9000 components. It lists an AC adapter for routine household power and an eight-AA battery compartment for outage backup; batteries are not the intended everyday power source. It lists waste receptacles and carbon filters as replaceable parts, but the carton quantity “varies,” and filters are listed for “certain models.” The paw-cleaning ramp is also described as an optional or model-dependent item. The product page presents a ramp feature, but the manual does not conclusively tie an included ramp or a starter-supply count to every LME5500 carton. Treat those package details as unknown unless the exact original box or seller contents are documented.

Ownership still involves checking the receptacle, replacing the carbon filter, keeping the sensors dust-free, cleaning the rake and tray, and clearing jams. The manual instructs users to keep the litter below its fill line and explains how to remove the rake and tray for cleaning. Eight AA cells do not make the Elite cordless. The archived LME5500 page prints 22.5 × 8.75 × 20 inches without naming width/depth/height axes, so that tuple should not be used to pass a strict footprint question. It gives no entry width or complete rake duration, and present supply availability is unknown. A list of old replacement-part numbers is not a promise that those parts can now be bought.

Who should use this assessment

The LME5500 makes the most sense as an owner reference for someone with the exact marked model who needs to identify its one-cat product-page guidance, hard-clumping litter and delayed-rake routine. A current shopper who needs an open clumping rake could compare the separately reviewed PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping model, but that is a different tray and consumable system; do not expect it to use LitterMaid parts or reproduce the same timer and manual. If your cat uses crystals, needs a verified multi-cat rating, is under six months, or has entry difficulty, the LME5500 documentation does not satisfy those needs.
