Model differences
LitterMaid Classic 580, 980 and Classic Plus: identify the model
The LitterMaid Classic 580, 980 and Classic Plus page for LM680C-02 share a powered rake, but their maker pages do not support the same cat-capacity conclusion or package quantity. If you are identifying a used box, start with the model number under the unit, then compare the corresponding product page and manual column. The archived source set is useful for owner references; it does not verify current offers, parts or a seller's actual carton.
Three labels, three evidence profiles
| Exact identity reviewed | Capacity wording | 2014 manual's starter parts | Ramp in manual table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 580 / LM580 | 2013 page: “1, 15-lb cat”; no precise inclusive upper-weight rule | 4 receptacles + 4 filters | Not listed for LM580 |
| Classic 980 / LM980 | “Multi-Cat”; no numerical household count; 50% more litter is a tray comparison | 4 receptacles + 4 filters | Included |
| Classic Plus / LM680C-02 | No numeric cat count on the reviewed product page/manual | 8 receptacles + 8 filters | Included for the LM680C manual column |
The LM680C-02 page records the exact package suffix; the manual cover names the LM680C family without “-02.” That is a documented bridge, not proof that every LM680C suffix has the same package. The manual lists supplies by model: eight pairs for LM680C, four for LM580 and LM980. The exact LM580 row was found on the archived official 2013 category and detail page; the Classic Plus LM680C-02 detail page is a separate 2016 archived listing. None makes a present-day seller's included parts certain.
Shared routine, shared limitations
All three assessments describe an open litter tray and a rake that pushes clumps into a disposable receptacle. The 2014 manufacturer manual calls for premium hard-clumping litter and rejects crystal, pearl-like and non-clumping material. The same guide says the rake starts after a 20-minute wait and the timer resets if the cat returns during that interval. This is a pre-rake delay, not a complete-cycle duration. It is also not a medical or usage monitor: the basic model pages and manual do not establish a camera, app, health counter or network connection.
The shared manual's important cat-care instruction is that clumping litter should not be used with kittens under six months; it says to leave the box off until the kitten is old enough. The manual also cautions against use for cats that may have difficulty entering or leaving. Follow the exact version supplied with a machine and use a manual litter routine for any animal outside the stated conditions. Do not infer a numeric capacity from a multi-cat title or supplies included in a carton.
Choosing between them as an owner
LM580 has the narrowest documented fit statement: the product page positions it for one cat. The page's “15-lb” phrase remains ambiguous as an inclusive upper bound. LM980 is the Classic with the larger-litter claim, a ramp and an unnumbered multi-cat label; the available text cannot confirm whether it meets a required two-, three- or four-cat rating. LM680C-02 is distinguished by the eight-pair starter set and ramp, not a published higher capacity. A large number of waste bins is an initial supply difference; it is not evidence that a box can safely serve more cats or go longer between checks.
For any used unit, verify the label, actual tray and rake condition, sensor response, adapter, ramp and remaining consumables. The manual's eight AA batteries are backup during an outage, not continuous battery power. Routine cleaning still includes waste-bin replacement, sensor care and more thorough cleaning; the rake does not remove all owner work. The present-day exact parts and supply crosswalk has not been established for these models. The old LM980 listing was marked out of stock in its 2013 capture, and old exact product routes returned 404 in 2026; neither fact proves global unavailability or discontinuation.
For a current purchase, compare a current model instead
All three LitterMaid references remain out of the active buying shortlist because current exact offers and parts were not verified. If your priority is clumping litter with an automatic rake, the separately assessed PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping is one current-source comparison. It is not a compatibility substitute for Classic receptacles, filters or ramp. If you are comfortable with a different litter and service plan, compare current sifting models by their exact manual, cat-fit facts and drawer routine. The right answer changes when a hard number, ramp package or litter type is essential; “self-cleaning” alone is not a useful match.
