A useful fit for

A good starting point when a household wants Whisker's newest non-camera model, WasteID and a five-cat manufacturer capacity rating.

The main tradeoff

It shares the large 22-by-27-inch footprint of the Pro and LR4, weighs 28.7 lb empty and has no integrated cameras. The advertised ten-day one-cat drawer interval is an upper claim, not a service schedule for every home.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the Litter-Robot 5 meet the five-cat manufacturer capacity rating?

Yes. Whisker lists Litter-Robot 5 for up to five cats. That is a capacity rating, not a promise that the waste drawer lasts ten days in a multi-cat home.

Will the base Litter-Robot 5 fit a 22-by-27-inch footprint?

The published footprint is 22 by 27 inches. Measure surrounding room for drawer access, power and entry before placing it.

Does the standard 5 include the 5 Pro's integrated camera system?

No. The dual-camera system is a 5 Pro difference. Choose the Pro only if its live view, recordings and membership-dependent identification are worth the added connected features to you.

Is WasteID available without buying the Pro?

Yes. Whisker lists urine-versus-solid-waste recognition on the standard Litter-Robot 5 as well as the Pro.

What the Litter-Robot 5 changes

The Litter-Robot 5 keeps the enclosed rotating-globe approach found across the Whisker line: the unit waits until a cat has left, then sifts clumps into a covered waste drawer and leaves the remaining litter in the globe. The practical gain is less routine scooping, not a box that takes care of itself indefinitely. The drawer still needs emptying, litter still needs topping up, and the globe and sensors need periodic cleaning.

Whisker gives the 5 a rating for up to five cats and cats weighing 3 to 30 pounds. Those are useful first filters, not promises that five cats will fit comfortably in every home or that the drawer will stay empty for ten days. The company says a one-cat household may go up to ten days before emptying. A multi-cat home, a cat that uses more litter, or a household wanting tighter odor control should plan to check the drawer more often.

Why choose the standard 5 instead of the Pro?

Both current Litter-Robot 5 models share the same listed footprint, entry dimensions, interior headroom, cat range and WasteID system. WasteID distinguishes urine from solid waste, letting the unit vary cycle timing and adding a category to the app history. The 5 has a color LCD control screen, weight-based monitoring and litter-level readings. It is therefore not a stripped-down conventional model; it already carries the line's newer waste recognition.

The Pro's main hardware distinction is a dual-camera system. If you want a camera view or value camera-based activity features, compare the Pro separately. If you mainly want automatic sifting, weight and visit tracking, WasteID and the color display, the standard 5 avoids paying for a feature you may not use. Whisker says visual cat identification and richer histories can require Whisker+; the membership terms and available features should be checked before treating camera analytics as a permanent included capability.

Measure before bringing one home

The published footprint is 22 by 27 inches, with an overall height of 29.9 inches and 17.5 inches of interior headroom. The entrance is 15.75 inches square. Whisker lists a 7-inch step and an empty weight of 28.7 pounds. The physical size is close to the 5 Pro and LR4, not the smaller EVO. Measure the space, allow yourself room to reach the drawer and carry the unit through the route it will take into the home. The manufacturer's footprint is not a clearance plan.

A cat's actual posture and willingness to turn in an enclosed drum cannot be reduced to the doorway measurement. If your cat is tall, broad, wary of covered boxes or dislikes a rotating enclosure, keep a familiar box available during transition and avoid removing that fallback just because the new machine powers on. Published fit guidance helps narrow choices; it cannot guarantee acceptance.

Litter and care still matter

Whisker recommends standard-weight clumping clay because the sifting system has to separate usable litter from formed clumps. Small silica crystals or beads may work if they pass the screen, but the company cautions that white or translucent litter can interfere with litter-level and drawer-full readings. Non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based and wood-pellet litters are not supported, and many plant-based litters may not sift properly. If your cat already uses a different texture, test compatibility and acceptance before changing the whole setup.

The manufacturer's 3-pound minimum is important for automatic operation: a kitten below that weight may not reliably trigger the weight-sensing cycle. Whisker provides a supervised semi-automatic procedure for smaller kittens in its instructions. Follow those exact instructions rather than relying on the normal automatic setting. Leave the unit in an accessible, quiet location, use the specified fill line, and keep sensors clear. Treat the box as an appliance that needs routine inspection, not a substitute for noticing changes in use.

Which alternative makes more sense?

Choose the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if integrated cameras matter enough to justify a larger feature set and possible membership costs. Consider the EVO if the 22-by-27-inch footprint will not fit and your household fits its lower two-cat, 3-to-19-pound guidance; its entry and interior are smaller too. The Litter-Robot 4 remains a four-cat option with ongoing litter-level monitoring and optional LitterHopper compatibility, but it lacks WasteID and has several configurable base, bezel and accessory packages.

In short, the standard 5 is the balanced choice in this specific family when its full-size enclosure fits and you want the newer WasteID experience without built-in cameras. Check the exact color, package contents, seller return rules and app requirements on the offer you are considering. The hardware facts describe the model; they do not tell you whether a particular cat will take to it.

Litter and care limitsWhisker recommends standard-weight clumping clay. Small silica crystals may work if they pass the screen, but translucent or white litter can reduce level and drawer-indicator accuracy. Non-clumping or loose-clumping, newspaper-based and wood-pellet litters are not supported; many plant-based litters may not sift correctly.
